Sassafras is a locality and township within Greater
Melbourne beyond the Melbourne metropolitan
area Urban Growth Boundary, 43 km east of
Melbourne's central business district. Its local
government area is the Shire of Yarra Ranges. At
the 2006 Census, Sassafras had a population of
968.
Sassafras is an attractive village located in the
bushy and scenic Dandenong Ranges, situated just
south of the popular tourist destination of Olinda.
The commercial centre of Sassafras is based
around the junction of the Mount Dandenong
Tourist Road and the Mountain Highway and
features a diverse collection of cafes, antique and
craft shops.
