Beechworth - Established in 1852 as a direct result
of the discovery of gold in the area and is one of
Victoria's most historic towns.
Beechworth has retained the basic character and
charm it had developed by the 1880's.
The streets and buildings, most of which were
founded in the 1850's and 1860's form part of the
heritage which has come down to us from the
early gold rush days.
Gold was first discovered in Beechworth in 1852. By
November, 1852, 1500 miners had arrived, 2
months later there were 8000 miners.
There are many grand historic churches, hotels,
Government gold office and administration
buildings, court house and the blue stone prison
which is still in operation today.
