Barmera is a town in the Riverland region of South
Australia. Barmera is on the Sturt Highway A20,
220 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, the capital
of the state of South Australia. Barmera is
primarily an agricultural and viticultural town and
is located on Lake Bonney Riverland, a freshwater
lake. The population of Barmera was 3015 in 2011.
Barmera lies in the middle of a swooping hairpin
bend of the Murray River, close to the Victorian
border, but it is hard to tell where the river stops
and where the flood plains and tributaries begin in
the area to the west of town. The wetlands
eventually flow into Lake Bonney, a large body of
water to the north of Barmera.
Barmera exists in a semi-arid location, north of
Goyder's Line. Barmera is surrounded by mallee
scrub.
