The town was called Basilisk until 1954, when it was
officially renamed South Johnstone after the
South Johnstone River.
South Johnstone (Basilisk) is a small town in north
Queensland, Australia. Basilisk is approximately 10
kilometres (6 mi) south-west of Innisfail and
is within the local government area of the
Cassowary Coast Region. At the 2011 census,
South Johnstone (Basilisk) had a population of 411.
